What is Summer Step?

Summer Step is Latin Link’s shortest mission programme, done in teams of 4-10. Lasting 3 or 4 weeks, this flavour of cross-cultural mission is a great fit for Uni holidays, sabbatical or summer break. Our teams serve in a community projects in one of our partner countries thoughtfully selected by Latin Link’s long term members. Projects are practical, such as working on construction projects or in education initiatives, and are always based alongside a local church. By living together with the community they serve, Step teams are immersed in the life, language and cultural rhythms of the Latin Church.
Duration:     3-4 weeks (July or August)
Team size:   4-10 members
Placement:  Immersed in a community project, linked to our long-term missionaries.
Accomodation: Step teams stay right in the heart of the community they’ve serving; living together as a team either at the project base, in the church building or with members of the church. Latin Americans are extremely hospitable, but as teams go to areas with greater economic need, you should expect accommodation to be cosy and fairly basic!

Fundraising

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What’s covered in the cost?

  •  Orientation before departure (residential)*
  •  Country specific training and materials
  •  Food and accommodation
  •  Health clearance and medical advice
  •  Project setup and supervision
  •  Residential debrief weekend
  •  Comprehensive insurance cover
  •  Admin costs – DBS, application process, resources etc.
  •  £50 towards project material e.g. bricks, paint, wood, cement, crafts/ art supplies etc.

What’s not covered?

  •  Return flights
  •  Vaccinations – some of them cost money
  •  Pre-departure UK travel – We usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team.

About Orientation

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target – all you need to do is get there!

My experience in Guatemala was so incredible; it was nothing I could’ve been prepared for. God has shown me what it is to truly rely on his goodness through the amazing people I’ve met, who, through their serving hearts have shown me what it’s like to do everything for God’s glory.

My favourite part of Step is how every person you meet impacts you in different ways. You might think the main reason you’re going out there is to help people in need, but most of the time, they are helping you. They demonstrate exactly what it’s like to live an honest and humble life in Christ, whilst being the happiest people you will ever meet. I genuinely am so thankful for seeing this with my own eyes.
